Fish farming market analysis

Fish farming market analysis

In recent years, Russian fish farming has exceeded its strategy target for the volume of fish grown: in 2023, a record harvest was achieved, exceeding the 2021 level by 29.9%. The increase in production was due to salmon, sturgeon and mariculture against the background of high domestic demand.

In addition to fish and seafood, by-products of processing are also of interest: fish oils, collagen, meat and bone meal. Without foreign competitors that left or reduced their presence, domestic producers increased their market share for product sales.

The provision of the Russian domestic market with fish products in 2023 exceeded 160%, fish and seafood accounted for 12.5% of the total volume of external shipments of agricultural products this year. Work is currently underway to open markets for export to the countries of Southeast Asia, the Persian Gulf and South America.

In turn, the rate of raw material production stimulates the development of processing. Processing plants are expanding their product range by experimenting with recipes. At the same time, products with minimal processing, such as gutted carcasses, steaks, fillets, and caviar, are also not losing their positions.

To maintain the profitability of fish farming, emphasis is placed on solving infrastructure problems and increasing storage capacity, which would reduce costs for all producers. Programs aimed at developing equipment and purchasing fish seed are already being implemented.

To increase the productivity of fish farms, specialists are constantly working to improve the quality of domestic feed. Given the current significant shortage of machinery, equipment, and labor, the issue of industrial filtration is of particular importance.

Problems of fish farms

  • Low survival rate and diseases of fry due to water pollution with residues of agrochemicals, salts and chlorine compounds
  • Increase in the number of pathogenic microorganisms in workshops due to the difficulty of observing hygiene standards during primary fish processing
  • High cost of equipment for growing fish cultures and the difficulty of servicing this equipment
  • Dirty dusty air in workshops for the primary processing of canned fish products and drying of meat and bone meal
  • Cloudy fish oil, marinades and brines due to mechanical debris, dust, organic matter and condensate getting into them
  • Low quality of final fish products does not allow establishing cooperation with large chain stores and increasing profits

Advantages of using filters in fish farms

  • Low cost of filtration while maintaining high quality of water purification, due to the long service life of filtration
  • Individual approach, allowing you to select or manufacture a filter that is compatible with any design
  • Wide range of filters by resource and micron, allowing you to select a solution for cleaning water, fat, brines and marinades
  • Robust design of steel filter elements for removing mechanical and organic contaminants
  • Quick-release connections on covers and pipes, allowing you to replace filters in the shortest possible time
  • Long service life and the possibility of backwashing filter equipment made of stainless steel

Benefits of Fish Farms Using Filters

  • Increased yield of aquacultures and maricultures due to sequential filtration of water in RAS and reservoirs with filters from 0.5 microns
  • Non-stop filtration in closed water supply systems due to the ability to switch water flows in the system
  • Normalization of mineral composition due to the increased density of UVMILK filters, from iron salts, residues of agrochemicals and chlorine compounds
  • Clean fish oils, brines, marinades due to UVMILK filters, eliminating foreign impurities
  • Prevention of growth of pathogenic microorganisms in workshops due to the use of hygienic napkins for removing fat emulsion
  • Protection of water supply system from ingress of fuels and lubricants due to UVMILK sorbents for reservoirs, eliminating fuel impurities in water

Economic justification

The fish farm produces an average of 2.5 tons of trout per month. Due to the poor quality of the water in which the fish are kept, there were problems with survival, the trout began to get sick, and the growth and development of the fry slowed down. Monthly production losses amounted to approximately 10% or up to 250 kg per month. The loss of the fish farm: 250 kg of trout X 4.8 € (the average cost price of kg of trout at the purchasing stage) = 1200 € per month or about 14400 € per year.

The use of a cascade filtration system of UVAQUA filters ensures high-quality water purification in the Recirculating Water Supply Systems and increases the survival rate of trout by 10%, which gives the producer additional profit: 250 kg X 12 months X 8 € = 24000 € per year. In this case, annual expenses on filters will amount to €2,500. Payback period for filters: less than 2 months.

Feedback on the use of UVMILK filters

«We have our own fish farm and a small fish processing plant. We specialize in sturgeon farming. We also grow fish seed ourselves. We use only premium European feed. We breed fish in the purest artesian water, with multi-stage purification before feeding it to the pool. At the last stage of purification, we had a household water filter marked 10 microns.

We noticed that with different purchases, the filters differed in density. We decided to switch to purchasing such filters from manufacturers. We began to look for and consider suppliers. In the end, we settled on the company UVMILK. It is important for us that the water at the entrance to the RAS is crystal clear, there should be no suspended matter. The water indicators after the filter suit us, as does the frequency of filter changes.»
